Conker’s Bad Fur Day Nintendo Retrospective
Who would’ve thought the bad boy of video games would turn out to be a fluffy-tailed squirrel?
Rare — the very same company who Disney is trusting to make Mickey’s Speedway USA — is set to shock the world with a greedy little squirrel who drinks, fights and uses urination as a self-defense mechanism. Spitting out a vocabulary that’s more foul than Eminem’s latest single, Conker is shocking, hilarious, grotesque and lovable all at the same time.
Rare has been given the nod to produce an “M” (Mature) rated game for N64, and to no one’s surprise they’re gleefully reveling in the seedy pleasures of full creative freedom. So it goes without saying that if you’re not 17, you shouldn’t come within 60 feet of this naughty, naughty game.
With Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Rare hopes to create a new genre of games which mixes truly rewarding gameplay with a storyline that’s genuinely funny. We’re not talking Mr. Belvedere-type funny here; we’re talking South Park or Tom Green-type funny. Rare has already proven that they have a handle on 3D adventure games (Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64), and their grip doesn’t slip when it comes to cracking jokes.
Conker may have seemed sweet when he appeared in Diddy Kong Racing, but after a particularly wicked night of heavy drinking Conker wakes up in a distinctly different mood. Cursed with the world’s worst hangover, Conker unenthusiastically embarks on an odd adventure. Conker explores demented 3D worlds with perplexing puzzles and roughneck enemies, driven by the potential reward of a soft bed and the strong appeal of making some fast cash.
In addition to making an engrossing single-player game, Rare has a couple of other goals in sight for Conker’s BFD. One major goal is to create an awesome four-player mode. Their other supreme goal is to evoke the kind of laughter which forces fully-grown humans to skulk to local drug stores and shoplift crates of adult-sized diapers. Now that’s funny.
