Donkey Kong 64 Rare Retrospective
Years in the making, Rare’s most ambitious project to date has finally landed on your N64. The natural progression of a phenomenal SNES and Game Boy series which revitalised one of the gaming world’s most long-established characters, it’s now strutting its stuff in full 3D: it’s no-holds-barred, it’s action-packed, it’s the frighteningly anticipated N64 debut of a videogame legend. It is, of course, Donkey Kong 64.
Faced with the reemergence of arch-enemy K. Rool and the biggest threat yet to his home turf, DK ropes in not only trusty sidekick Diddy but also fresh faces Tiny, Lanky and Chunky for this latest gargantuan mission, knowing he’s going to need all the help he can lay his hands on. With very different abilities distinguishing the five playable Kongs (including a selection of suitably mad comedy firearms and unique methods of reaching areas inaccessible to their friends), you can bet you’re going to have a lot of work on your hands mastering each area with each monkey.
The development team here at Rare have worked flat out to get the game into your home for the 1999 festive season, and the bundled 4MB Expansion Pak has allowed them to maximise every possible opportunity in graphics and gameplay.
