Mickey’s Speedway USA GBC Nintendo Retrospective

Rare Ltd. put the pedal to the handheld metal in this on-the-go partner to Rare’s Mickey’s Speedway USA N64. This Game Boy Color exclusive bulges with 20 tracks, driver’s ed, special scenes for Game Boy Printer and secret links with Mickey’s Speedway USA N64 and Mickey’s Racing Adventure for Game Boy Color.

As in the N64 version, the action commences when the Weasels dog-nap Pluto and his diamond-studded collar.
Quicker’n you can shout “Start yer engines!” Mickey’s pals rally for a series of crosscountry races in pursuit of the rascally Weasels.

Just as in Mickey’s Racing Adventure, the action takes place in three-quarters view. And just as in Mickey’s Speedway USA N64, the action takes place on five four-track circuits named Traffic Troubles, Motor Way Mania, Freewayphobia, Victory Vehicles and Frantic Finale. You must finish in at least third place to advance to the next leg of a circuit.

Once you’ve opened a circuit, you’ll be able to drive it solo in Time Trial mode. Excel here to open Time Attack, in which you race against one CPU-controlled driver.

At game’s start, you have your pick of six drivers: Mickey, Donald, Minnie, Daisy, Goofy and Pete. Minnie and Daisy are light but offer the quickest acceleration and handling. Hunky Goofy and Pete pair the fastest top speed with the lousiest acceleration. Mickey and Donald drive the most evenly balanced chariots.

Two players with two Game Boy Systems and two Mickey’s Speedway USA can race head-to-head via Game Link cable. If you have a Game Boy Printer, you can print out scenes and characters from the game’s Tour Journal.

The Trophy Cabinet glistens with hardware for each conquered circuit and difficulty level. Once you’ve earned all first place trophies in all modes, you’ll be able to race as Huey, Dewey or Louie.

If you have Mickey’s Racing Adventure and a second Game Boy Color system, you can unlock a secret track. Choose the IRL-link option in Speedway USA and send email from the Racing Adventure post office to your Speedway Pak. Finally, you can unlock Huey as a driver in Mickey’s Speedway N64 simply by starting the game with a Mickey’s Speedway USA GBC and a Transfer Pak loaded into your Controller.

Mickey’s Speedway USA is for Game Boy Color only. It is not compatible with monochrome Game Boy systems. The independent Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has rated the game E (Everyone).
