THE JUNGLE CHASE

Breaking through the gate of the second Jungle Base, Joanna locates a dataDyne jeep and makes her way towards it. Commandeering the vehicle, the agent peels out towards a long trail that will lead her to the third installation. Unfortunately, her plans are somewhat impeded when she is tailed by a legion of dayaDyne soldiers in their own all-terrain vehicles. Joanna will need to survive the ensuing roadtrip to make it any further…

MISSION OBJECTIVES:
• LOCATE AND DESTROY CYBORG FACTORY
• DEFEAT MINK HUNTER

The controls for the jeep are quite simple; you’ll use the directional pad left and right to swerve in the desired direction, and use the directional pad up and down to adjust your speed. Pressing the A button will fire your Machine Gun to combat any vehicles you come across, and pressing B when you’ve picked up ammunition on the road (identified by the red “A” crates) will allow you to reload when prompted. If you look on the right side of the screen, you’ll see 13 grey blocks underneath a ‘Distance’ heading. These blocks will measure the distance to the next Jungle Base, and over time will disappear to indicate your progress; when all of the blocks have disappeared, you’ll arrive at your destination and complete the Jungle Chase mission.

As you drive up the trail, you’ll encounter three different opposing vehicle types in Green, Khaki and Blue. The Green Jeeps are mercenary vehicles that lay a series mines on the trail behind them – if you run into the mines, they’ll explode and damage your vehicle, so they’re best avoided. You can either choose to shoot at the mines with your Machine Gun if your pathway is too narrow, or you can swerve to avoid them entirely. The Green Jeeps won’t deviate too much from the path where they lay their mines, so you can continue firing to chip away at their vehicles health, as indicated by the red blocks that appear when shot.

The Khaki Humvee’s are the most aggressive of the vehicles you’ll encounter; if they’re ahead of you, they’ll slow down to obstruct the path, and if they drive up behind they’ll attempt to force you off the road and slam themselves into your jeep. If you’re running parallel with them at any time, they’ll open fire from their windows and harm your vehicle. If you see them coming from below, it’s best to attempt to speed up as their repeated bashing will cause incremental damage – and if you see them on the road ahead, open fire with your Machine Gun or collide with them when you’re traveling at a fast speed, as they’ll spin out.

The final vehicle you’ll encounter the trail is a Blue Cargo Truck, which travel in the opposite direction. The biggest threat that the oncoming Cargo Trucks pose is that if you crash into them at a high rate of speed, you’ll die instantly, no matter your current health. The best strategy to survive an encounter with a Cargo Truck is to slow your vehicle down as much as possible the second that you see them coming, or try and swerve out of the way so they don’t become an obstacle. Hitting a Cargo Truck at reduced speed will allow you to survive the collision, and continue down the trail.

You’ll need to keep your reflexes keen as you travel as well – if you drift from the trail and onto the sand you’ll lose significant speed. Instant death can also be experienced when traveling at a high rate of speed and missing wooden bridges; if you hit the shoreline before you embark on the bridge, you’ll drain your health entirely and fail the mission. The concrete overpasses pose a similar threat, as a collision with the middle abutment will result in an immediate fatality. You’ll need to keep an eye on your speed and be prepared to slow down accordingly to avoid oncoming obstacles as you remain on the path.

The Jungle Chase is a difficult, albeit relatively short, mission. You’re given the tools to speed up the process and outrun the dataDyne opposition, but doing so will give you less reaction time. It’s best to prioritize your driving first; make sure you can travel at a speed where you can swerve effectively and remain on the trail. Most vehicles can be overtaken or passed with little difficulty at a moderate speed, which will allow you to avoid taking unnecessary damage. Once the ‘distance’ icons have all disappeared, you’ll reach the end of the trail and complete the Jungle Chase mission.
