Rare Gamer’s Piñatapedia
Introduction
Viva Piñata is really very good despite what you might have heard. Don’t let the cutesy graphics fool you; the game is very deep and involving and will suck away at your time like you wouldn’t believe! Give it a chance and you will find a very engaging and entertaining game hidden within. A lot of people will dismiss it as nothing more than a kids game but they couldn’t be more wrong and I have no shame in announcing that I love this game.
Viva Piñata is very open-ended; you can do things in any order you choose, providing you’ve met certain requirements and reached the appropriate level, so this guide is intended as more of a reference tool to help you on your way if you find yourself lost rather than leading you step for step right from the start all the way to the end because, as you will find, there is no end in the traditional sense of the word!
This guide will take you through all of the piñata and their requirements, along with what you need to do to get all the variants and evolutions. If you have any problems or questions about the game that are not covered in this guide then please e-mail me; paul@raregamer.co.uk and I’ll do my best to help you.
If a particular question keeps cropping up I’ll add it to this guide. If you’re going to e-mail me, please be sure to put “Rare Gamer – Viva Piñata help” in your subject line otherwise you risk having your e-mail banished into the cold, dark spam pit. The same applies for Private Messages in the forums if that’s your communication route of choice, but just so I can find it more easily amongst the sea of ‘RE: no subject’ messages littered throughout my inbox. Alternatively you can head on over to our forums and ask in there. Be sure to have a scan through the existing topics to see if your question has already been asked. If it has then you’ll more than likely find the answer a few posts later in there too.
Before we continue I have to give a big shout out to the absolutely wonderful Piñata Island website; quite possibly the biggest, best and most comprehensive Viva Piñata site out there. These guys were a huge help when it came to writing this guide and you really should go and visit them.
So what’s the point of the game then? There’s no evil tyrant to overthrow or princess to save; just a garden that is lying desolate and full of junk. You arrive, get given a rusty shovel and told to give it a tidy up. Is that it? Well, the ultimate aim is to spruce up your garden so that it is nice enough to attract all the various piñata species to it and that they then decide to become residents. Get them to do that and then you are tasked with romancing them all so that you can produce variants for each piñata species. Achieving all this is where the challenge lies; each piñata species has their own likes and dislikes, other piñata that they get on with and others that they hate. Your job is to keep up this fine balancing act of ensuring that all your residents are happy enough to stay and to breed, as well as doing enough to your garden to attract new ones. There’s sixty different piñata species so as you can see, there’s a lot of work to do.
Below you will see a list of links that will whisk you off to the various sections of the Piñatapedia.

Paper pets
Lots of accessories are on sale in paper pets but I’m only going to list the ones that are needed to help meet a romance requirement or if you want to make your own produce. The rest of them are just cosmetic and as a result will not be listed here. Still, feel free to blow your cash on whatever bits and pieces you want to help jazz up your piñata as it all helps to boost their value if you sell them. Ivor Bargain
Once you’ve reached level 10 or thereabouts a beggar will wander in to your garden. You can donate money to him and once you’ve donated 1000cc he’ll stop coming into your garden and will go and open up his own store in the village. He sells some good bits and pieces that make your gardening a lot easier. Here’s what he’s got for sale, the cost, when it becomes available and its use;
– Captain’s cutlass (11000cc / 30): will stop the ruffians and Professor Pester from ever coming into your garden again
– Chocolate sniffer (540cc / 14): works like a metal detector except it’s hunting chocolate. Your shovel will beep when you are near buried chocolate coins

– Gem (360cc / 34): a nice and shiny gem
– Gem seed (248cc / 34): will grow into a gem tree
– Glass watering can (1575cc / 12): holds more water
– Joy sweet (83cc / 12): feed this to your piñata and it will max out their happiness meter
– Lantern o’ loot (220cc / 14): put this near the entrance of your mine and it will increase the odds of you getting something good dug out by the diggerlings
– Oak gate (154cc / 18): strongest gate in the game
– One pour wonder (4125cc / 24): one pour of this onto your plant and you will never need to water it again
– Platinum shovel handle (1125cc / 30): strongest shovel handle in the game
– Red eye rainbow (616cc / 14): reduces the amount of fights your piñata will have
– Special mix fertiliser (9cc / 20): fertilises any plant
– Stone wall (116cc / 18): strongest fence in the game.
– Water waiver (792cc / 14): reduces the amount of water all plants need
Bart’s exchange
Lots of the items available in the store can be tinkered with in order to create something new. Some piñata will need an item that’s been tinkered with in order to meet a requirement. Bart is the guy who does this for you. He offers three levels of service; gold, silver and bronze. My advice is to always go for gold as it guarantees the transformation will take place. Silver and bronze services have less chance of succeeding and that makes them just a waste of your money. Here’s what can be tinkered with;
– Apple becomes a toffee apple
– Banana becomes a banana split
– Blackberry becomes blackberry jam
– Bread becomes a sandwich
– Carrot becomes carrot cake
– Corn becomes bread
– Gem becomes a rainbow gem
– Gooseberry becomes a gooseberry fool
– Honey becomes a bottle of medicine
– Monkey nut becomes peanut butter
– Pumpkin becomes a jack o’ lantern
– Milk becomes cheese
– Toadstool becomes a mushroom
Willy Builder
Apart from all the piñata houses Willy will make for you, he also provides some special buildings later in the game. Here’s the list, what they cost and when they become available;
– Helper house (220cc / 10)
– Honey hive (66cc / have a buzzlegum resident)
– Mine (16500cc / 26)
– Milking shed (616cc / buy a moozipan)
– Shearing shed (462cc / buy a goobaa)
Piñata species
Piñata come in two forms; wild and tame. Wild ones are hiding in the surrounding woods around the edge of your garden. Meet specific criteria and they will visit, but with a set of requirements. Meet those requirements and they’ll become residents, then you can see what they need in order to romance. Tame ones can be bought from paper pets and have no appear, visit or resident requirements.
The first time you are introduced to any particular species of wild piñata it’ll be black and white. These piñata are just looking at your garden; you’ve done just enough to spark their interest but they are not yet ready to become residents. There are three stages that the piñata go through before this happens;
1. Appear:
When a piñata species appears for the first time a quick cut-scene will play that shows them coming out of the surrounding wild habitat towards your garden. They won’t actually come into the garden, they’ll just loiter around beyond your boundary.
2. Visit:
Fulfil the visit requirements to make the piñata come into your garden and they are re-classed as visitors. Once they are in they can interact with anything in your garden but you cannot control them in any way, although your shovel can destroy them. Visitors will do their best to fulfil their resident requirements with no input from you so be mindful of what their requirements are. For example, if it involves eating one of your existing residents you need to be ready with your shovel to smack the visitor if you do not want your existing resident to be eaten.
3. Resident:
When you have met all of the requirements for a piñata to become a resident they will change their colour. The first time this happens you’ll know because the camera will zoom over to the piñata as it regenerates Doctor Who-style into a full colour piñata. You can only have two piñata become residents in this way. To get any more than two at one time you’ll have to romance them or get Gretchen to fetch them for you.
Here’s a run-through of all the piñata in the game, whether they be wild or available in paper pets. Sours and how to tame them are in here too. I’ve listed each piñata’s specific details for resident and romance requirements and what you have to do to create a variant or an evolution (if there is one).

Dragonache
Appear requirements:
None
Visit requirements:

Resident requirements:
Buy a mine from Willy Builder and place it in your garden. They cost 16500cc and are available once you are at level 26. Then hire a diggerling (you can hire more than one if you like to help speed up the process) who will then go digging in the mine. Give it some time and eventually the diggerling will unearth an egg that you cannot break with your shovel. Direct a cluckles to the egg and it will sit on the egg and hatch it. Out will come a baby dragonache. Unlike all the other piñata the dragonache will not mature on its own; you have to induce it. To do this you have to feed it a bottle of milk, a redhott, a salamango, a dragumfly and a snapdragon flower. The baby dragonache will now change into a cocoon and then hatch as an adult.
Romance requirements:
None
Variants:
Rather than feeding an adult piñata something to create a variant, the dragonache variants are determined by what surface the egg is hatched on;
– Hatch the egg on soil for a brown variant
– Hatch the egg in water for a blue variant
– Hatch the egg on grass for a green variant
– Hatch the egg on cracked soil for a gold variant (the only way to achieve this is to start a new garden and leave some of the original hard, cracked soil intact. Don’t flatten it out with your shovel to make it soft earth. Hatch the egg on this cracked soil.)
Comments:
There is only one dragonache egg in each garden so you’ll need to create new gardens and have mines in each of them in order to get all the variants. The egg cannot be broken or sent via crate. The dragonache cannot be sold. If the dragonache is getting in the way you can make it leave your garden by holding your cursor over it, bringing up the menu by pressing X and then choosing the option to ‘dismiss’. If you want to get it back this can be done in Gretchen Fetchem’s but only in the garden in which it hatched. Gretchen cannot fetch wild dragonaches.

Tower of sour
Sours can be a right pain but never fear as they can be tamed so that they become normal piñata. All you have to do is meet the requirements. If you do this you’ll be given a tower of sour piece. This is a totem pole of sorts that, when activated, will keep those sours out of your garden. You can turn the pieces on or off by going into the menu where you’ll find the option on the top left of the menu.
Variants
Each piñata can change into one of three colours. Once you’ve created this variant you cannot change them back and you cannot make them change to another variant. In order to make your piñata change into a variant you’ll need to make it eat something (or a couple of things sometimes). For example, a pretztail needs to eat a bluebell to turn blue, a gooseberry fool to turn green and a water lily flower to turn pink. I’ve listed all of the different requirements for each piñata in their relevant sections.
However, this does not apply to the flutterscotches. They don’t have variants; instead, by feeding a white flutterscotch different things you will create a new species of flutterscotch. This is the only way to get more of these different species. If you have two green flutterscotches and they romance they’ll produce a white flutterscotch and you will need to feed it the appropriate item if you want it to change from a white to another colour.
Evolution
Some piñata can be evolved into a completely new species. Here’s a run down of what the requirements are for each evolution;
– Candary: feed a buttercup to a sparrowmint
– Fourheads: romance two twingersnaps and then keep a close eye on the egg that is about to hatch. It will sit there bouncing and after a long wait it will jump into the air really high three times. On the third jump hit it with your shovel
– Juicygoose: feed a gooseberry to a quackberry
– Lackatoad: feed a nightshade berry to a lickatoad then tap it with your shovel before it falls ill
– Pigxie: romance a swanana and a rashberry
– Redhott: have a taffly catch on fire (make it fly through a torch in your garden) and then use your watering can to put out the fire
– Salamango: feed a chilli to a newtgat
– Twingersnap: romance two syrupents and then keep a close eye on the egg that is about to hatch. It will bounce for a while and then jump into the air really high three times. On the third jump hit it with your shovel
– Zumbug: feed a blackberry and a daisy to a horstachio
Wildcards
These piñata are extremely rare and occur completely randomly. Rare have confirmed that the odds are 1 in 10,000 of getting one so technically speaking if you bred 9,999 of the same species without getting a wild card, the 10,000th piñata to be hatched would be your wild card. There’s no tricks or methods I can pass on to you; you just have to keep breeding until you eventually get one; it could be on the fifth go, it could be on the five hundred and fiftieth … it’s completely random! Wild cards will have a slight deviation from a normal piñata; for example, it could have horns. The only other difference is that its starting value is about ten times greater than normal.
Romance
All piñatas have different requirements that you will have to meet if they are to romance and produce more piñatas. You’ll know if you have met the requirements because a pink heart will appear over its head. You will need two piñatas in this state; direct one of the loved-up piñatas to the other, they’ll do a little dance and then you’ll be taken to the romancing mini-game. In here you have to move your piñata around a maze to find the other one who’s waiting at the end. There’s a time limit and the maze walls are made up of red bomb-like critters called loathers. These will explode if you touch them and doing so will cost you a life. The number of lives you have when you begin the maze is determined by how many piñatas of that particular species are already living in your garden; the more piñatas you have in your garden when you romance two of them, the fewer lives you’ll have in the maze. There are chocolate coins spread around the maze but I wouldn’t make the effort to get them. For the amount of cash that’s in there you’re better off selling a whirlm or two once you’re back in your garden.
If you should fail the maze, you’ll be taken back to the garden. Your piñata will have had their hearts broken but don’t worry as they soon mend and you can try again.
Once you reach the other piñata waiting at the end of the maze, the piñatas will go into their house and do their romance dance. You are shown this dance the first time you have that species romance, but from then on it is optional (move your cursor to the house and press X to look inside while they are romancing). Once they have done the deed the piñata’s romance requirements will reset so you’ll have to meet them all again, or feed them a romance sweet, if you want that particular piñata to be able to romance again.
In order to get the master romancer awards, you need to have seven piñata of the same species living in your garden at the same time, although you don’t need to keep on romancing to achieve the award. You can, if you have the cash, get Gretchen Fetchem to keep on getting the piñata for you until you hit the necessary seven piñatas you need in order to be classed as a master romancer of that species.
Personality clashes
No matter what you do to keep every piñata happy, some will just not get on with others and they’ll fight every chance they get. If you must have both species in your garden at the same time, I’d advise you to fence an area off to keep them separate.
– Arocknids hate reddhotts
– Barkbarks hate kittyfloss
– Buzzlegums hate newtgats and raisants
– Chewnicorns hate pretztails
– Dragumflies hate reddhotts
– Flutterscotches hate fudgehogs
– Horstachios hate ponockies and zumbugs
– Lickatoads hate newtgats
– Newtgats hate buzzlegums and lickatoads
– Pigxies hate rashberrys and swananas
– Swananas hate juicygeese, pigxies and quackberrys
– Zumbugs hate chewnicorns and horstachios
The food chain
Some wild piñata will have to eat your residents if they are to become residents themselves. Here’s a handy list of who will be feeling peckish when they come a-visiting;
– Arocknid wants to eat a taffly or a raisant
– Badgesicle wants to eat a newtgat
– Buzzenge wants to eat a candary
– Cocoadile wants to eat a quackberry
– Crowla wants to eat a lickatoad
– Eaglair wants to eat a buzzenge
– Fudgehog wants to eat a whirlm
– Galagoogoo wants to eat a mothdrop
– Lickatoad wants to eat a taffly
– Macaracoon wants to eat a syrupent
– Mallowolf wants to eat a rashberry
– Pretztail wants to eat a bunnycomb or a cluckle
– Profitamole wants to eat an arocknid
– Roario wants to eat a doenut or a zumbug
– Sherbat wants to eat a mothdrop
– Sour cocoadile wants to eat a sweetooth or a swanana
– Sour macaracoon wants to eat a cluckle
– Sour mallowolf wants to eat a pigxie
– Sour profitamole wants to eat a red flutterscotch
– Syrupent wants to eat a mousemallow
If you’re looking to avoid having your residents gobbled up by some greedy wild piñata, make sure you fence off your residents so that wild piñata cannot reach them. If it is a sour piñata causing the problem, just tame it to add that block to your tower of sour. That will keep all future sours away for good while it is activated.
Make your own produce
If you don’t want to buy produce, you can make your own if you’d prefer. It’s a good way to make cash as you can sell off the produce you make. Here’s how you do it;
– Have a buzzlegum in your garden and buy it a beekeeper hat from paper pets. Then buy a honey hive from Willy Builder. The buzzlegum will then produce honey automatically
– Have a goobaa in your garden and buy it a bonnet from paper pets. Then buy a shearing shed from Willy Builder. The goobaa will then produce wool
– Have a moozipan in your garden and buy it a bell from paper pets. Then buy a milking shed from Willy Builder. The moozipan will now produce milk
