Q: Salutations Rare, and welcome to Scribes!
At first, this was going to be a “why you not make platformers no more?!” question, But you’ve probably received enough of those kinds of letters. Instead, I ask: where do your beloved characters like Kameo and Banjo go when not used in any games for the next decade? Is there some kind of nightclub or perhaps a prison cell? Or are they gulp ….dead?
Secondly, I just wanted to express how much I loved Nuts & Bolts! Creative and inventive game-play, brilliant soundtrack, amazing level design, a quirky, mechanical, almost steampunk setting, and that outrageous humour Rare is known for! I’d love to see you guys make “Kinect Sports at the Jiggosseum!” Another question: do any of your team like brightly colored ponies?
Sincerely yours, a loving fan,
Aaron “Pinkie” H.
A: Yes, all of us. The pony thing is confirmed at interview stage.
Glad you enjoyed Nuts & Bolts. Where do the characters go between games? Well, they’re all off having crazy adventures too expensive and asset-heavy to adapt into game form. Just this month Kameo came back from overthrowing the Demigod Orbotrux in the Sapphire Dimension by turning into Arachnochamp and pounding the Incomprehensible Tower with nukes until it fell on his stupid head. So that’s where they are. Except for Bumper the badger, who’s in jail.
Q: Hi guys. Is there any planned Darts DLC for Season 2 as playing the Champion opponent is too easy and a 3 game match is a bit short against a friend over Live. Being able to set the game to a multi set match would be epic.
Chris
A: One of the most traumatic parts of game design is establishing a cut-off point – we had all kinds of alternative game mode pitches for every sport bustling around during the main game’s development and DLC period, but it wasn’t possible to make all of them and release it before 2027. So we made the best decisions we could, and on the whole it worked out pretty well. If you had to make the call between a multi-set Darts match and a Darts match with zombies erupting out of the board, we would hope you’d naturally side with the zombies too.
Darts designer Paul chips in with a few suggestions: “Why not make a tournament with your friend over LIVE (first to win three matches wins etc.) or rock a few Challenges back and forth to each other? Have you beaten the Champion with two perfect games?”
Q: I didn’t get the bonus disc for PDZ (which I love, btw), and I like Mai Hem, so I was wondering if there was any concept art or anything that was floating around your offices. My grand scheme would be to make myself a sweet wallpaper from said pictures/drawings, but if you already have a computer or phone wallpaper (or both), I’d gladly take those.
If you read this, thanks for your time.
Rick
A: Congratulations, Richard: you have unwittingly put us in a position where we find ourselves able to help. This is most irregular. Check the Wallpaper panel on the Perfect Dark Zero page for a previously unused Mai Hem design, created alongside a range of others at the time of the game’s launch but unseen until now. So while I argue with a designer over the absent hyphen, you can check out Mai(-)Hem in her final incarnation and a couple of earlier concepts. Enjoy. And don’t nag for widescreen versions, it was done seven ruddy years ago.
