Top 5 Best Local Multiplayer Maps

Before the advent of Xbox Live, Local Multiplayer was an event rather than a commonplace, thinly-veiled threats were shared openly in the room rather than over broadband and your mothers promiscuity remained unquestioned.
A lot has changed since then, especially your mothers fidelity, but Rare has never faltered with providing an addictive and engrossing means to face off against your friends – and enemies – with their top notch multifarious match makers.
While Local Multiplayer is looking more like a relic of the past with the socially awkward turning to friends overseas, these timeless maps and scenarios still hold up today, making for an engaging match of screaming, swearing and inappropriate thrusting that has only ever been contested by your fathers wife. These are the Top 5 Best Local Multiplayer Maps.

#5. KONG BATTLE MULTIPLAYER: MONKEY SMASH ARENA ONE – DONKEY KONG 64 (N64)

While it’s notoriously mammoth Kong quest was enough to satisfy even the most obsessive of completionists, Donkey Kong 64 wasn’t without an addictive Local Multiplayer mode that invited three other players to join in as well. For its time, Monkey Smash boasted a wealth of customizable options and interesting arenas to explore, though the obvious favorite that stood out among the rest was the elaborate “Arena One“. Playing host to four contrasting areas that met up in the center, Arena One also had the distinction of hiding a few secret tunnels behind some illusionary walls that could be freely passed through during the match. Bewildering your friends was only one aspect of this unforgettable stage, as you’d be expected to collect ammunition and horde watermelon health to survive the coming onslaught.

#4. TARGET SHOOT MULTIPLAYER: SS ANUBIS TARGET RANGE – JET FORCE GEMINI (N64)

It would seem the obvious choice for sharpshooters and trigger-happy gunslingers to enter the foray of Jet Force Gemini‘s battle mode, a more thrilling option might come from it’s Target Shoot courses. Touring the cramped quarters of the SS Anubis in a fixed perspective, you and three friends will be tasked with blasting away an army of cardboard drones through the view of your respective cross-hairs. While it may seem rather simple in theory, in practice it can get very convoluted and competitive as you attempt to best the marksmanship of your opponents. Cardboard Tribals will manage pop up as well, though their deserved deaths will result in a demerited score– there isn’t much incentive to relay this information to your friends as they open fire on the innocent ‘bears’ however. Nobody said anything about fair play!

#3. CHEMICAL WARFARE MULTIPLAYER: TOTAL WAR – CONKER’S BAD FUR DAY (N64)

While it’s squirrelly successor, Conker: Live & Reloaded, may have focused half it’s efforts on bringing an impressive and in-depth Xbox Live Multiplayer mode to the mature adventure, the original Conker’s Bad Fur Day title was no slouch either. Case in point, the Total War Multiplayer scenario tasked four players to assume the roles of a pair of Tediz and Squirrels as they ransacked each others fortresses. To make things interesting, two large gas Canisters could be stolen from the rivals base and returned to the center where alarms would herald the oncoming toxic offense. Agile players could seek out a gas mask to wait out the assault, though any players unfortunate to be caught up in the action would succumb to the fumes, resulting in a quick kill for the opposing team. Total War was gripping multiplayer at its finest!

#2. SNOWFLAKE MOUNTAIN MULTIPLAYER: ICICLE PYRAMID – DIDDY KONG RACING (N64)

You might not expect a title as cheerful as Diddy Kong Racing to provide a lasting experience that appeals to young and old, but Icicle Pyramid can provide just as much cursing and competitive taunting as any mainstay release on Xbox Live. With the interior of the pyramid sculpted into three separate floors, you’ll need to collect enough ammunition to fend yourself against three other racers – a task made all the more difficult with its tight-knit structure. Dropping in between the floors when pursued and hiding out in its spanning caverns is fundamental to eliminating the competition, but do keep an eye on your own health – you’ll only be allotted 4 hits before you’re removed from the game as well! Icicle Pyramid stands as one of the most frantic and rage inducing multiplayer maps for the Nintendo 64, and with good reason!

#1. MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN MULTIPLAYER: ARKANGELSK FACILITY – GOLDENEYE 007 (N64)

GoldenEye 007 managed to shake and stir the gaming world in its heyday, paving the way for many developers to follow suit and expand on the groundwork, and while Bond is starting to show some wrinkles, its endearing multiplayer mode is always met with enthusiasm. The unanimous choice for many seems to be the Facility, which when combined with the “Man with the Golden Gun” mode turns 007 into a fast-paced blitzkrieg against a single near-invulnerable player. To further its multiplayer legacy, the Facility has since reappeared in GoldenEye‘s spiritual successor, Perfect Dark on N64 and Xbox Live Arcade. It’s latest incarnation in the second complimentary map pack for Perfect Dark Zero is proof enough that this timeless favorite doesn’t have to upgrade its gameplay to be exciting as ever.
