Top 5 Best Rare DJ’s

Approaching the long weekend with Victoria Day, the extended three day weekend presents itself as a great opportunity to ditch the tedium and turmoil and escape to the land of boffo tunes and flashy lights. Unfortunately if you’re not Canadian – which equates to around 98.9% of you – Monday still rears like a tempered beast and you won’t get to party into the night like a certain Red Squirrel. Don’t fret though! If you can’t manage to hit the local clubs this weekend, you can always turn to Rare‘s stellar hits for a glimpse of the night life and frenzied electronic spittin’. While there’s more than a few clubs that we could mention, including high profile venues like Conker‘s Rock Solid, and the Big Bug Fun Club of Jet Force Gemini, we’ve chosen instead to focus on the Disk Jockey’s that make these events possible. Whether they’re content with sitting back and scratching a few records, or overseeing a massive bash with choice tunes into the night, it’s these selfless heroes that kept the party alive, and our irritating requests unanswered. Let’s get this party started! These are the Top 5 Best Rare DJ’s!

#5. DJ JAMJARS OF SPIRAL MOUNTAIN F.M. – BANJO-KAZOOIE: NUTS & BOLTS (XBOX 360)

Introduced in Banjo-Tooie as the brother of Bottles the mole, Jam Jars is his siblings opposite in every conceivable way. While Bottles was one for the quiet life, his brother preferred the strict regime of the military which led him to teach the bear and bird duo his basic training during their second adventure. It’s quite surprising that despite his take-no-prisoners attitude and no-nonsense approach, the mole would find himself the voice behind Spiral Mountain F.M. as an on-air DJ. Seen briefly during the introduction of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, the moles voice can be heard crackling through a nearby stereo, treating the Spiral Mountain residents to the Windy theme of Conker’s Bad Fur Day. Keep on jammin’, Jam Jars!

#4. DJ KEPI & KAT IN THE NIGHTCLUB STAKEOUT – PERFECT DARK ZERO (XBOX 360)

Despite your predisposition towards music as a whole getting worse and worse as time goes on, if Perfect Dark Zero serves as an accurate depiction of the future, than we should have nothing to fear. If you’d to sample a bit of this future tunage, you need only to escort Joanna Dark through the streets of Hong Kong and follow the thumping bass until you’ve happened upon the nightclub. Once inside you’ll spot the patrons showing off some ridiculous future dance moves along to the song Limelight performed by DJ Kepi & Kat. The real world duo situated in San Fransisco, California had released the song as a single on their first EP also named Limelight which topped the charts and ultimately found its way into the perfect prequel. Eat your heart out, Rock Solid; we’ve got some real DJ’s on our side!

#3. MUSICAL MUMMY OF THE EMBASSY BALLROOM – GRABBED BY THE GHOULIES (XBOX)

The Embassy Ballroom of Grabbed by the Ghoulies fame presents itself as an ideal monster mash that Cooper proceeds to gate crash and ultimately play the role of the bouncer to its Skeleton and Zombie dancers. While the remixed rendition of the Grabbed by the Ghoulies theme is a real treat to listen to, if you can manage to find your way towards the Mummy DJ overlooking the entire spectacle you’ll hear him improvising a bit of record scratching into the monster mix. When Cooper returns to the room later on the mixin’ Mummy is nowhere to be seen, unless Cooper tosses one of the amplifiers into the center of the dance floor to have the traitorous Mummy emerge and start beating up the Zombies and Skeleton dancers for you. This is what happens when you ask for too many requests, kids…

#2. DK RAPPIN’ CRANKY KONG – DONKEY KONG 64 (N64)

As a last-ditch effort at attempting to remain relevant, Cranky Kong had thrown aside his old gramophone record in favor of a proper mixing table in Donkey Kong 64 – a decision that musical historians look back on as “the day cool music died “. Cranky got his chance to shine during the DK Rap introduction, a musical number meant to showcase the many talents of the DK Crew which players would have to endure every single time they started up the game. If it wasn’t enough to have Chunky throwing everyone off with his poor choreography and ill-choice of outdated disco apparel, Cranky Kong shows up the entire crew with his impressive DJ skills, where his mixing talents would come in the form of record scratching and freestyling on his dual mixing table. Come on Cranky, take it to the fridge!

#1. MC FISHFACE OF BIG BUG FUN CLUB – JET FORCE GEMINI (N64)

If you can manage to disguise yourself and slip past the bouncers into the Big Bug Fun Club in Jet Force Gemini you’ll happen across a DJ named MC Fishface sitting inside a large booth. Unlike the other entries on this list, this DJ isn’t set in his ways when it comes to sticking to a default playlist, so if you approach him from the front you can request a change-up in his music. There’s a wide variety of tracks available, whether you’re requesting a bit of funky disco, fast-paced ambiance, soothing rhythms or just something with a beat, MC Fishface will commend your choice and announce the new mix to the floor with much enthusiasm. Join the patrons and return to switch it up again as many times as you’d like, MC Fishface has you set with his selection of “phat sounds” and “big tunes on the decks”!
