Today during Microsoft’s E3 Press Conference, we were fortunate enough to get a preview into the newest addition to Sea of Thieves with Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life, releasing on June 22nd. Whether you’ve been sailing since launch, or you’ve just started earning renown, A Pirate’s Life is bursting with a bevvy of new features and faces that we’ve never seen before, and we’ve taken it upon ourselves to breakdown the five biggest new advancements and inclusions that make us excitedly giddy about our next pirating adventure.

#5. UNDERSEAS SIEGES WITH SINISTER SIRENS – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)

Krakens, Megalodons, Sharks, that one time a bit of seaweed brushed your leg and you shrieked like a banshee; there are many terrors of the deep to be found throughout Sea of Thieves, but the Merfolk have always come to our rescue when we’ve been lost at sea. However, if we follow the call of the Siren like we have for the azure smoketrail, we might be sent to the Ferry of the Damned instead. Debuting in A Pirate’s Life, these nefarious nereids seem to be rather territorial, confronting any foolhardy trespassers that swim into their watery domains. As we’re unfamiliar with the rites of combat against these adept swimmers, we might be ill-equipped under the surf, but perhaps victorious confrontations will lead to promising fortunes worth guarding…

#4. EARNING PASSAGE TO THE FORBODING SEA OF THE DAMNED – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)

Initially shown in ‘The Art of Sea of Thieves’, the Sea of the Damned was envisioned as a spectral area cloaked in a perpetual fog, with structures and spires towering over tiny ships below. While we would become very familiar with the Shores of Plenty, The Wilds, The Ancient Isles and the Devil’s Roar, it would seem that the Sea of The Damned remained just outside of our reach – enveloped by the Devil’s Shroud. Fortunately, A Pirate’s Life brings this new area to life, beckoning players who have charted the aforementioned areas to begin anew with this incorporeal seascape. There’s new secrets to uncover, landmarks to discover and territories to explore, and we’re extremely excited to join these piratical pioneers as we set sail into this decidedly haunting realm as well.

#3. SWABBING THE DECK WITH THE OCEANCRAWLERS – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)

Along with the Sirens, A Pirate’s Life continues to dredge the depths of the Sea of Thieves for further opposition, bringing a cursed crew aboard with the OceanCrawlers. Quite literally in fact, as the trailer shows the barnacled brutes clambering onto the deck of a ship and then facing off against a hardened crew that had previously thought a Ruby Splashtail was the worst thing to take on board. While we do have a bona fide Giant Enemy Crab that succumbs to massive damage when its weak point is attacked, the curse also comes in clam-headed and Electric Eel-wielding merfolk flavors. We’re eager to break through the ranks (and their tough, barnacle-laden shells) to prove ourselves against this latest ocean threat, which seems to offer plenty of diversity among the new adversaries.

#2. INVESTIGATIONS INTO PIRATE SPIRITS AND GHOST TOWNS – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)

Ghosts – you’ll encounter them in Sea of Thieves during Tall Tales and moments of triumph if you’re a pirate of certain renown; and if you share more in common with Bosun Bill, you’ll likely become one yourself. While these spirits were often restless, they were rather benign, and only seeking your aid – but the tides will change in A Pirate’s Life, where pirate Phantoms will only desire that you join them in death. You’ll find these vengeful wraiths in an eclipsed pirate town, itself a new addition to the Sea of Thieves that seems to imply that civilization is beginning to teem beyond that of a few dotted outposts. Lofty clock towers, winding streets and picturesque vistas await your gaze – oh, and the remorselessly chilling stares of immortal apparitions too – they’re sort of attached to the place…

#1. SAILING ALONGSIDE THE RENOWNED CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)

Standing as the most impressive reveal in the Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life trailer, and one that still has our jaws firmly dropped is that of the appearance of the infamous, Captain Jack Sparrow. Having swayed his way through a number of adventures involving Black Pearls, Dead Men’s Chests, World Endings and Strange Tides, it seems that Captain Jack will accompany pirates on the Sea of Thieves following a brig-break across five Tall Tales. As a further treat for those familiar with the Pirates of the Caribbean universe (but you have heard of them?) are promised encounters with antagonist Davy Jones, and new sights that harken back to the films as well as the original attraction. It’s a pirate’s life for us, and we shall sail together!
