#5. FINDING KARNATH’S LAIR MIGHT SEA TO THE BATTLETOADS – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)
Since they first hopped onto the scene in the original Battletoads adventure, Rash, Pimple and Zitz have shared a certain affinity with serpents, choosing to hitch a ride on their backs during the Snake Pit stage, and later facing off against a monstrous Boa Constrictor named Karnath in Super Battletoads. Perhaps its fitting then, that their legacy would live on with an appearance on Snake Island in Sea of Thieves. Once you’ve managed to conquer your Ophidiophobia with a bit of a shanty, you’ll need to ascend the large central island and head towards the shrine of the Stone Serpent. Keeping your eyes peeled and venom-free when scanning the rocks covered in island flora to the north, and you’ll discover a painted Battletoads logo, with all three ‘Toads present in the center. Gnarly, Pirate dudes!
#4. IT’S TROUBLE IN PARADISE WITH THIEVES’ HAVEN SECRETS – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)
If you’re keen to dig up a something filled with fun, we’d first recommend taking a trip to the pastoral plots of Piñata Island in Viva Piñata, or sister title Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise. Keeping in step with Rare‘s latest offering however, you could do worse than setting a course for the sprawling reaches of Thieves’ Haven. Sailing into the center of the bay, you’ll discover a jetty equipped with a ladder that will lead up to the highest reaches of the island – once you’ve arrived at the top, a short jaunt across a rickety bridge will reveal another large cave painting that references a past Rare title. This design features the Fudgehog, Horstachio and Pretztail variation of Piñatas chasing each other about the sun in the center of the rockface. After all these years and we’re still carrying spades…
#3. ISN’T THAT QUITE ABSURD, REFERENCES TO A BEAR AND BIRD – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)
two decades of ursine-aviary partnership since its release in 1998, the inseparable pairing of Banjo-Kazooie were given two fitting references to be found in Sea of Thieves. The first easter egg can be found on Plunder Valley, where a precarious overlook above Canyon Pass features another hidden painting – this time featuring a Bear and Bird worshiped by a crowd below. The second homage pays tribute to the anniversary date with the ‘Bear & Bird Figurehead’; a ship customization which features Banjo clutching the Red-Crested Breegul as a crest all its own. The description would read, “A mysterious bear carrying an unusual bird believes to keep evil witches at bay.” With the price harking back to Banjo‘s birthday at 1,998 Gold, we couldn’t resist this anniversary offering.
#2. THIS PERFECT FIGUREHEAD IS QUITE THE ACHIEVEMENT – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)
Carrington’s finest Agent cannot be found on any island in Sea of Thieves, rather her infamy extends to that of legend, for those that strive for a perfect gamerscore. Enter the Perfect Dark achievement, which requires players survive a storm at night without any assisted illumination, or as the riddle puts it; “A lady once sailed through a storm at night, turned off her lights did she to show off her might.” If there’s any doubt that the aforementioned ‘lady’ could be that of Joanna Dark, look no further than the Huntress Figurehead, which features a double wielding femme fetale with an iconic hairstyle. The items description pushes the point further, with a reference to Joanna‘s prequel, Perfect Dark Zero; “The perfect choice for dark-minded pirates who have zero mercy for their foes.”
#1. CAPTAIN PENDRAGON AND THE BLACKWYCHE SHIPWRECK – SEA OF THIEVES (XBOX ONE)
One of the most understated easter eggs in all of Sea of Thieves can be found in a rather unlikely place; the devastated domain of Shipwreck Bay. Many riddle quests will allude to a ship called the ‘Blackwyche’, the remains of which can be found on the southern shore of the main island. The namesake of the ship belongs to a Commodore 64 title that Rare released in 1985 under Ultimate: Play the Game, in which players would explore a haunted galleon as the fiercely mustached Sir Arthur Pendragon, a protagonist somewhat analogous to their Sabreman character. Inside the Captain’s Quarter’s, a portrait seems to draw comparisons to Sir Arthur, which is all but confirmed by certain riddle quests calling him the ‘Legendary Captain Pendragon’.
Dead men tell no tales, indeed!
