Top 5 deceptive Rare characters that caught us with shocking reveals (contains spoilers obviously!)
Rare have been more successful in creating instant hate figures than the top contending reality TV shows, and with villians like General Scales, the Troll King Thorn and Wizpig of Starfox Adventures, Kameo: Elements of Power and Diddy Kong Racing respectively, they have us eagerly awaiting the final battle so that we can pound their faces into the sand. But then there are the deceptive ones – characters that have managed to sneak by our radars and have us misdirecting our anger towards a hypothetical punching bag while they stand by the wayside, cackling with malicious laughter. These Rare villains all have terrible, terrible secrets, and its the revealing of their ulterior plans in-game that left us absolutely gobsmacked. Sure, Rares film adaptation epic Goldeneye 007 had us facing off against turn-coat Alec Trevelyan, but we had an entire film to prepare ourselves for the confrontation. These characters take no mercy, spotting our dropped jaws and taking swings to dislocate them. These are the Top 5 Deceptive Rare Characters That Caught Us With Shocking Reveals.
#5. CONKER’S BAD FUR DAY – THE LITTLE GIRL
Awakening to find himself in the throes of battle during the It’s War chapter, Conker adapts from his once whimsical surroundings to take on the paranoid nature of the Tediz ambush. With the untold horrors awaiting him around every corner then, it’s quite suspicious when the red squirrel spots a small girl who seems to have her bottom half caught in a hole in the center of the battlefield. While her demeanor is appropriately childish, her extensive knowledge of the Tediz armament leaves Conker a bit suspect. Still, his intentions are good as he reaches to pull the girl out of her entrapment, but things go rather pear-shaped when it is revealed she is merely a puppet for a massive spider-drone Tediz mech found deeper inside the hole. Still up to a rescue, Conker?
#4. DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 3 – CONTROLLED KAOS
After feeding K.Rool to sharks and sinking the whole of Crocodile Isle during the conclusion of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, it seemed as if the scaly Kremling would be absent in the next adventure. Lo and behold, when Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! hit the scene, K. Rool’s role was taken up by a large rocket propelled robot named KAOS. After you’ve managed to defeat KAOS for a final time however, the truth is revealed as a nearby curtain sweeps open; exposing K.Rool manning a single control booth that was used to manipulate KAOS. To add another twist, it turns out Donkey and Diddy Kong were trapped inside KAOS’ shell the entire time, so essentially you were fighting against your own kind the entire game.
#3. JET FORCE GEMINI – MIZARABLE IDENTITY
If you’ve found yourself sweeping across star systems with Juno, Vela and Lupus in Rare’s cosmic adventure Jet Force Gemini, you’re likely familiar with the Tribals. These short and furry creatures have received the brunt of Mizar’s wrath, seeing the insectoid tyrant conquering planet after planet of the outclassed Tribals. After warming up to King Jeff, the praised leader of the Tribals, the trio set course to take care of Mizar once and for all on his home world. After a long and arduous battle, Mizar is eventually defeated by the Gemini team, but as the smoke clears the back of Mizar’s disembodied head opens to reveal Barry, the jealous brother of King Jeff who controlled the faux foe the entire time. Sibling rivalry, now just a galaxy oppressing reign away!
#2. PERFECT DARK – BLONDE’S HAVE MORE FUN
Little is known of the shady characters that do their dealings with insidious megacorp dataDyne, and Mr. Blonde is no exception. While his motives seem to be keeping connections between the hostile alien race, the Skedar and dataDyne open, he has an ulterior agenda all his own that doesn’t seem to be too clear until the botched plan to clone the President sends him over the edge. Confronting Trent Easton after Joanna Dark has successfully assassinated the Presidential clone, Mr. Blonde corners the NSA Agent. After informing Trent that his failure will no longer be tolerated, Mr. Blonde removes his holographic disguise and exposes himself as one of the Skedar! Our cries of shock when we found out were nearly as loud as Easton’s…
#1. GRABBED BY THE GHOULIES – OH CRIVENS!
The kindly old butler, Crivens proves to be an indispensable ally to the somewhat inept and intrepid Cooper, guiding him through the massive manor and informing him of new challenges and characters that will further his progress; Crivens seems to be just as concerned with overthrowing his temperamental master, Baron Von Ghoul as much as Cooper is. When Cooper finally does manage to arrive in the Baron’s Quarters, he find Crivens waiting for him. Offering Cooper the weighty key to the front door, the butler turns on Cooper and blindsides him with it, removing his rubber mask and revealing himself to be Baron Von Ghoul all along! As classic as this trope is, we were genuinely shocked when we found out that the butler did it…
