Top 5 Features We Can’t Wait To Try With Kinect Sports Rivals

Since it’s unveiling alongside Killer Instinct at E3, Kinect Sports Rivals has had very little publicity – keeping itself wrapped in familiar secrecy that any Rare fan is sure to identify with. That was until the cover was broken at Gamescom and Rare ended up stealing the show with Rivals, thanks in part to some seriously draw-dropping new features as explained in this Behind the Scenes video. While our last Rivals list debated whether or not we’d realize we were aching great jerks, this month we’ve turned our sights towards the newest features that Rare has unveiled since June. These are the Top 5 Features We Can’t Wait To Try With Kinect Sports Rivals.

#5. PLUNGING INTO A WORLD OF EMBITTERED RIVALRY WITH THE NEW XBOX LIVE

The first and second seasons of Kinect Sports provided us with a personal journey; it was all about besting your previous records and trying to push yourself to do a little better than yesterday. If you did venture online, you’d be provided a number of competing athletes, but it was never anything personal as each match was directed by which gamer was available to play. Now that Kinect Sports Rivals has hit the scene, all of this friendly competition nonsense is about to change – you’ll be able to face off against familiar rivals, even if they’re unable to play at the time thanks to Xbox One’s Living Games technology. Each new challenger is a new rivalry forged, and you’ll be able to track every triumphant victory as you both progress through the ranks during play. It’s multiplayer spite we haven’t seen since the Golden Days of gaming!

#4. RECLAIMING THE BASEMENT AND RETURNING TO INTROVERSIVE FORM

Setting up the Kinect sensor the first time was a bit like inviting your nagging mother into the basement – after moving around your furniture and picking the socks off the floor to appease it, you’d have to open a few windows and bathe the room in unnatural light – certainly not a setting gamers were accustomed to! But now Kinect Sports Rivals is embracing the dank and dingy quarters as home, allowing you to play in complete darkness if you see so fit, or even letting you collapse onto the couch and compete with ‘seated’ settings. It’s a bit amusing that one of the features we’re so eager to try is one that we’ve effectively been living for ages, but it’s interesting to see Kinect Sports Rivals offer us a compromise between in-depth motion sensing action meshed with our strong desire to do as little moving as is physically possible.

#3. ACTING ON UNDERHANDED MALEVOLENCE AND THEN ESCAPING THE CONSEQUENCES

In case you missed the Official E3 Trailer and skimped on our accompanying Top 5 List, Rare has showcased our favorite bit of ankle tugging rock climbing in the aforementioned Behind the Scenes video. Now naturally we’re going to be using this tactic as often as possible because we’re a shallow bunch that will do anything to win (My gamertag is ‘Lerako’ if you’d like to avoid me altogether) but it begs the question of what other events have been tailored with this sort of consequence-free jerkiness in mind. Can I intentionally slam into other racers during wake-racing and sink their crafts? Can I assassinate my rivals during Target Shooting? Once we remove the moral objection and pixel-explosions of tossing a human from 400 feet, we just want to see how we can ruin the game for everyone else and then benefit from our deviousness.

#2. EAGLE LEGION, VIPER NETWORK AND WOLF CLAN – WHAT IS YOUR TRUE CALLING?

When my Day One edition of Kinect Sports Rivals arrives in the post, I’ll be aligning myself with the Viper Network, as every strategy I’ll employ will be rooted in cunning subversiveness. Also, I think my rivals shouting “Viiiiiiiper!” in outrage as I tug them from the rock-climbing wall sounds better than a trailing “Eeeeagle!” or “Wooooolf!”. That said, it’s difficult to predict whether one team will become more prominent over another, or whether you’ll manage to switch teams half-way through like an unscrupulous Viper would. Whatever the case, we’re really interested in the larger role that the teams are going to be playing in Kinect Sports Rivals and how basic decisions will ultimately effect the game months down the road. If you’re like us and fantasize about throwing people from cliffs, Viper is the route to go – also consider therapy.

#1. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, MY FRIEND, AND WE’LL KEEP ON FIGHTING, TO THE END.

By far the coolest feature that Rare unveiled during Gamescom, and one that we’re most excited about is the Champion Creation feature in Kinect Sports Rivals. Stepping up and allowing the Kinect sensor to scan in a few angles from your unappealing face and juxtapose them together to create an onscreen counterpart that will represent your character as you take on more rivals. Because we’re predictably ego-driven, we’ve wanted to see how we would look as Champions since our chisel-jawed superhero fantasies can hardly be ignored and frankly, our real world aesthetic hasn’t been cutting it for years. With Kinect Sports Rivals you’ll manage to look into my eyes as you’re hurtled off the edge screaming, getting an accurate representation of my smirking face as I finish the ascent. Actually, I think I might just have issues…
