#5. ULTIMATE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MEANS IT’S TIME TO LOSE! – DIDDY KONG RACING (N64)

While collecting Silver Coins in Greenwood Village may have traumatized a generation of easily impressionable gamers, racers made of stronger stuff could ultimately triumph over Arcane-hog-inspired adversity and unlock a second more difficult Adventure file to satiate their twisted whims. If this just wasn’t enough, a hidden third option was still available – entering ‘TimeToLose’ into the Magic Code option would enable the ‘Ultimate A.I.’ option. Sprightly racing was turned on its head in favor of raw endurance and tactical execution; your combatants had gotten smarter, faster, and if you failed to meet their lofty expectations (a near-mathematical certainty) you would be left trailing in their wake. Sacrifice some pride with a new challenge and you’ll find that ‘TimeToLose’ is a great way to see 8th place from a new perspective.

#4. GET OUT ON THE DANCE FLOOR – MICKEY’S RACING ADVENTURE (GAMEBOY COLOR)

Earning your cheats in Mickey’s Racing Adventure requires quite a bit of mileage, with several races and showdowns with Pete hanging in the balance – if you can manage to best Pete’s challenges and purchase the keys to the Post Office you’ll find a plethora of bonus features waiting inside. It’s worth the effort for cheats like Submarine Mode and Turbo Charges which turn your racer invulnerable and garner a bit of extra speed respectively, but a final challenge can be found in Disco Mode. This groovtastic feature will turn any race into a technicolor light show, as an entire saturated spectrum plays out on the track; it’s so vibrant and quirky that it’s nearly impossible to complete any race with Disco Mode on, and your attention will inevitably meander before finishing your first lap – it’s definitely what separates the men from the mice.

#3. DO YOU EXPECT ME TO CHEAT? NO MR. BOND I EXPECT YOU TO DIE! – GOLDENEYE: 007 (N64)

Rare‘s classic Bond masterpiece holds quite a number of codes, each one requiring budding agents-in-training to complete their missions quick-like with exceptionally fast times resulting in a new cheat code finding its way into the extensive listing. While difficulty in mission objectives could be altered during regular gameplay, an especially nefarious cheat called ‘Fast Animation’ would have all of Bond’s adversaries energized with a bit of added spring to their step. General Ourumov‘s best were taking over the Facility, the Archives and the Cradle where reinforcements arrived twice as fast and outrunning Bond was the new past-time. To sweeten the deal, this lethal mode of die and let live was unlocked in Statue Park – a difficult mission set in a Soviet-filled labyrinth – with a time of under 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Move quickly, Mr. Bond.

#2. JUST HOW FAST IS ‘WAY, WAY, WAY TOO FAST’ EXACTLY? – KILLER INSTINCT (SNES)

With Killer Instinct out of the arcades and into the living room, dedication to mastering the proven fighter was easier than ever – what wasn’t so easy was beating a seasoned veteran who had some serious speed to their advantage. For fans of KI looking to match nimble finger speed with palatable Combo Breakers, they too would have to learn to step up their game, and luckily three cheat codes would allow them to do just that. ‘Fast Speed’, ‘Faster Speed’ and ‘Fastest Speed’ could be utilized with friends or taken to the extreme with an onslaught of fighters in the single player tournament. To onlookers, the swift spectacle brought home harder hits, quicker matches and more speed that any hapless player could hope to use in a single fight. The result was a gritty, high-endurance match that any Killer Instinct fan should try at least once.

#1. JUST HOW HARD ARE YOU? PROVE IT! – DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2 (GAMEBOY ADVANCE)

There is no greater anxiety than losing a Kong in Donkey Kong Country, and once you do, you’re either looking in desperation for another Kong Barrel to warrant another chance or a Star Barrel to save your progress insofar. These wooden sanctuaries are your only means of salvation and only a fool would take them for granted. If you’re feeling especially foolish, a code exclusive to the Gameboy Advance port of Donkey Kong Country 2 called ‘ROCKARD’ will rid any second chances or save points; get hit even once with your recently orphaned Kong and you’ll start the entire level over again. If you’re rock hard enough, the perils of Bramble Blast will task you with reaching its end with only a single mistake and without saving! Best of luck there, lads!

  1. I had no idea that GoldenEye had that code. I’d hate to imagine what the second Bunker stage would be like with that cheat….

  2. Don’t forget the Enemy Rockets cheat in Perfect Dark in single player!
