Top 5 Must-Have Rare DLC Packs
by Lerako on Jan 26th, 2012
Once upon a time before the advent of swearing at friends over Xbox Live, developers were given one shot to create a title and release it to the hapless peons to cash in their pay cheques. Due to the creative potential of the developers however, every project was bound to be frothing with new ideas daily that would go on to benefit the project – but due to the constricting development cycles, sometimes these ideas would be left on the cutting room floor. Flash forward to the modern era and you’ll find the solution in Downloadable Content, or DLC that a developer can release to the masses in order to add in those last minute details that didn’t make it – or squeeze every last penny out of their audience for a rifle paint job and a playable arse. Thankfully Rare hasn’t capitalized on the latter, and instead have taken in upon themselves to release some rather excellent DLC over the years that will have you with more ‘bang for your buck’. Join us as we count down the best of the best! Has your favorite made the list? Of course not, don’t be silly. These are the Top 5 Must-Have Rare DLC Packs.
#5. MAPLE LAKES & MIDNIGHT MOUNTAIN
Riding on the success of the first Rare Kinect release, Kinect Sports, the seasonal sequel had to go above and beyond the previous offering to stay in the sensational. If you find the events getting stale however, you’ll find that change-ups aren’t just reserved for baseball with the inclusion of the Maple Lakes Golf Pack and the Midnight Mountain Ski Pack. Each add-on provides you with a plethora of new courses to tackle, whether you’re tackling the icy slops of Backwoods Blast or swinging around on the rolling plains of Trident Harbor. With new achievements to nab, new slopes to shred and new greens to putt, 400 Microsoft Points for each aforementioned pack is a small price to pay for the hours of fun you’ll have with these athletic add-ons.
#4. ELEMENTS OF POWER PACKS APLENTY
Shifting from one Elemental Warrior to another is something that femme fatale Kameo is used to at this point, but if you’d really like to raise some eyebrows with some curious new transformations – look no further than the Kameo: Elements of Power extensive Character Pack library. Such entries include the Winter Warrior Pack to provide much-needed festive flair to all transformations, Fright Warrior Pack to add a spooky twist to shape-shifting, and even the Design-A-Skin Pack from the fans to change your Pummelweed into Mumbo-Jumbo of Banjo-Kazooie fame. With each Pack only running you a mere 80 Microsoft Points, and the Design-A-Skin offered completely free; it’s chump change to induce a real change with Kameo‘s outward appearance.
#3. CELEBRATE WITH THE PARTY PACK
Gather some streamers, pump up the music and ready the confetti – this is a real reason to celebrate good times, c’mon! The Kinect Sports Party Pack came seemingly out of nowhere when it touted brand new challenges, plenty of achievements and even new mascots to boot. For this reason alone makes it nearly impossible to pass up, but the best bit for us was Rare‘s collaboration with Samsung made the Party Pack absolutely FREE. With an added event for each of the six sports that came with your copy of Kinect Sports, you were getting double the game for zero the cost. If you’ve already mastered Kinect Sports we dare you to try Rapid Runner and nab the achievement on your first go. Worth a purchase? Let our review speak for us.
#2. FINDING L.O.G’S LOST CHALLENGES
So, you’ve collected all 131 Jiggies, shamed Trophy Thomas into an early retirement and managed to clear the high-score boards on Klungo‘s rubbish arcade machine. Hats off to you, old bean, but if you really want to show off the attention craving completionist loony that hides beneath the surface, you’d best get L.O.G’s Lost Challenges! This upgrade to Banjo-Kazooie: Nut’s & Bolts was seen shortly after its release, offering up brand new spangly achievements to acquire, new Jiggies to collect and even a capsizing amount of Klungo Minigames to tear out your hair over. Perhaps the best surprise of all was the inclusion of Stop ‘N’ Swop vehicles handpicked from contest winners including our own Tomajko! Asking just 400 MSP, this is one to splurge on.
#1. ACCESSORIES FOR AFICIONADOS
Following a steady second to Grabbed by the Ghoulies in cheeky references to Rare titles of the past, Viva Piñata provides bonus Rare accessories that your Piñata’s can wear around the garden as you look on with rising envy. With seven Accessory Packs to choose from, there’s plenty of Rare merch to choose from, including – but certainly not limited to – Vela’s Wig from Jet Force Gemini, A quaint Mr. Pants bowler hat, Baron Von Ghoul‘s flight helmet of Grabbed by the Ghoulies, a war helmet belonging to Conker of Bad Fur Day and even Jiggy earrings taken from Banjo-Kazooie. With each Pack scanning through at 90 MSP with three accessories each, it’s dirt cheap in virtual garden terms – and all your Piñata’s will look cooler than you.
