I need those Bananas, I'm diabetic!

Top 5 Classic Rare Villians Who Just Didn’t Know When To Quit

Tyrannical feats of world domination can be found in plenty supply in Rare‘s various universes, with each optimistic antagonist spending mere minutes planning their latest diabolical plot, employing the necessary meandering minions and constructing their massive doomsday devices that will see them to victory. If they had a little hindsight however, these villians would be better off if they hadn’t bothered at all, or failing that, not bothered after the third time they’d been foiled by the protagonist. Perhaps more of a threat to themselves than others, these Rare villains really should have quit while they were ahead, but through an insatiable vengeance, maddening vendetta or plain old stupidity they’ve continued showing up time after time without learning anything from the last confrontation. Join us in seeing off these classic characters that have given resilience a new name, though it probably won’t be the last time we see them if their thinly veiled threats are to be believed; these are the Top 5 Classic Rare Villians Who Just Didn’t Know When to Quit.

#5. WIZPIG THE RACING HOG – DIDDY KONG RACING SERIES

Not content with ruling his own world in the vast recesses of space, intergalactic hog, Wizpig, uses descends upon Timber Island with a plot to rule the paradise. Things initially look grim for the island inhabitants, as Wizpig refuses to leave unless someone can best him at racing, though it’s not long until Diddy and friends show up on the scene to do just that. Even after Wizpig is defeated, he decides to gatecrash the celebrations thrown in the islands victory and challenge the inhabitants a second time. A rematch set on his homeworld goes just as badly leaving Wizpig marooned on a distant planet, though this does little to prevent the portly porker from plotting his third strike during the cliffhanger of the wild racing adventure…

#4. THE EVIL DARK QUEEN – BATTLETOADS SERIES

In the prologue of the original Battletoads title, it’s established that vile protagonist, the Evil Dark Queen has just been defeated by the Toads with a plan for revenge, which spells out her career in villainy fairly accurately. Hardly one to take a hint after she’s defeated a second time, the Evil Dark Queen flees the scene with a promise of revenge – something she must grow tired of restating with each foiled plan. While the tempered temptress has gone on to pair herself with a legion of daunting foes and hardened minions in follow-up Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Battletoads & Double Dragon, her luck doesn’t seem to fare any better as Rash, Pimple and Zitz serve the Queen a heaping helping of Nuclear Knuckles for eternity.

#3. EVIL WIZARD MALKIL – WIZARDS & WARRIORS SERIES

At first glance it would seem that malevolent magician Malkil of Wizards & Warriors fame is just as stubborn as the previous entries, as he’s appeared to do battle with Kuros during the events of Wizards & Warriors, Ironsword: Wizards & II, Wizards & Warriors III: Kuros Vision of Power and Wizards & Warriors X: The Fortress of Fear. If you can manage to lead Kuros to the end of the third adventure however, you’ll find Malkil sitting at his throne looking a bit bored and asking Kuros for a truce. If you accept Malkil‘s offer he’ll wait until your back is turned before bombarding Kuros with spells, so your only option is to do battle which ultimately results in Malkil‘s defeat. He could have had world domination, but he couldn’t resist turning on Kuros – that takes an unreal commitment to the dark side!

#2. KING K. ROOL – DONKEY KONG COUNTRY SERIES

You’d have us puzzled if you asked what a Kremling would possibly want with a massive horde of bananas, but whatever keeps King K. Rool after D.K.‘s supply must be well worth the trouble to end with his face getting kicked in at the end of every title. With each defeat, King K. Rool seems to examine the fatal flaw in his plan and tries again once he’s fixed it, which ultimately begins every new title in the Donkey Kong Country series, with the kidnapping of Donkey Kong, then Donkey and Diddy and lastly Diddy, Tiny, Lanky and Chunky leading to Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble and Donkey Kong 64 respectively. With such a track record behind him, you’d think K. Rool would find himself as the problem in his endless plotting…

#1. GRUNTILDA WINKYBUNION THE WITCH – BANJO-KAZOOIE SERIES

Taking the addage of “quitting while you’re ahead” to new meaning, Gruntilda‘s good looks haven’t especially benefited from her endless run ins with the bear and bird duo. For starters, her plot to kidnap Tooty to steal her good looks in the first Banjo-Kazooie adventure ended with the Witch tumbling down her tower escarpment and into an early grave. Not one to let a little thing like death get in the way, Gruntilda rose from her grave twice during the events of Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge and Banjo-Tooie, the latter of which reduced her to a disembodied head. Favoring vengeance above common sense, Grunty spent the next eight years bouncing back to Spiral Mountain to battle the duo in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, the end of which saw the heady hag promising revenge yet again…
