Top 5 Biggest Unsolved Rare Mysteries

Supernatural occurrences, the Loch Ness Monster, and Unidentified Flying Objects – ultimately these unsubstantiated happenings all pale in comparison to Rare‘s vast array of perplexing mysteries and unexplained phenomenon to be found in their vast library of classic titles. Feeling rather seasoned and confident with our investigative research on the likes of hidden heifers, private pants and easter eggs, we’ve returned long after the trail has gone cold to report our findings on even larger mysteries still. Is the truth stranger than fiction? “Can you handle it?”, as Jack Nicholson once doubted aloud in A Few Good Men. The answer, of course, is that our hours of hard work, scrutinizing prowess and unwavering dedication have lead us back to precisely where we started. Move over Mire Mare, take a seat Stop ‘N Swop; only the best false leads will make this list. These are the Top 5 Biggest Unsolved Rare Mysteries.

#5. BARRICADED BONUS BOOK BACKLOG? – GRABBED BY THE GHOULIES (XBOX)

Exploring your surroundings in the Upper Corridors during “The Riddle” chapter of Grabbed by the Ghoulies will ultimately pay off, as your seeking skills will lead you to a Bonus Book hidden in a vase, far off the beaten path. Take a moment to peer into the next room from your current vantage point however, and you’ll spot 11 unobtainable Bonus Books intricately arranged to form a question mark. Lacking a means to squeeze in between the bars, these questionable books will remain splayed out at an arms reach for the remainder of the game, never to be collected. Akin to the similarly debated ‘Frankie Says’ shirt, Rare‘s diagnosis of alcho-pop mind rot has seemingly closed the book on such a novel Bonus Book mystery. It’s an unfortunate end for anyone who still enjoys exploring through Rare‘s haunted house romp. (all two of them).

#4. A GRATING MYSTERY GETS RELOADED – CONKER’S BAD FUR DAY (NINTENDO 64)

While you wouldn’t be too tempted with chowing down on some chocolate found inside the Poo Cabin (or at least, you shouldn’t be), one certain piece finds itself sealed off by a large grate which seems to lead elsewhere. The problem is hardly rectified when the area is flooded with raw sewage (which usually seems to help) during the Sewage Sucks chapter. Taking the plunge and investigating further does nothing to shift the framework, safeguarding its single piece of chocolate energy forever. Interestingly enough, the grating grille returns in Conker: Live & Reloaded where it serves the same purpose of separating the sobering Squirrel with his anti-gravity chocolate fix, this time with reinforced fencing for good measure. Why bother including this useless feature twice? Only Rare knows for certain – and they’re not telling!

#3. A DUNGEON OF HARD KNOCKS – KAMEO: ELEMENTS OF POWER (XBOX 360)

Situated at the base of the Enchanted Kingdom and barred away from the prying eyes of elemental elves and faerie-folk alike, the Dungeon of Eternal Life plays host to an interesting assortment of elemental Trolls seen nowhere else in the game. As you move from cell to cell observing the inmates, you’ll likely be distracted by the shaking of a large chained door found on the western side of the Dungeon. Clearly whatever is on the other side of this massive door wants out, and it will persistently slam against its chained prison in a fruitless bid to escape. While the labyrinthine Dungeon features many restricted areas that can be accessed as you progress in your adventure, this alluring chained door will remain firmly locked despite the rattling, keeping its persevering prisoner -and its mysterious intrigue – at bay for eternity.

#2. ABANDON HOPE, ALL TWINS WHO ENTER HERE – JET FORCE GEMINI (N64)

The Abandoned Space Station in Jet Force Gemini has all the makings of a perfect urban legend; it was previously hidden in the latter half of the game, which meant you needed to unlock it first – couple that with low ambient music and an unsettling atmosphere and the rest writes itself. If you can manage to overcome Mizar‘s drones and descend through the charred husk of the orbiting Space Station you’ll arrive at the final deck, which houses a mysterious door all its own. Unlike the previous entries however, this door does allow passage when approached, but doing so will reveal a thin alcove and nothing more. Keep in mind, an entire floor is dedicated to this grand reveal, which seems rather underwhelming when the door offers up little more than a bit of closet space. Why? Things like this keep us up at night, Rare!

#1. AMMUNITION PROVIDES FULLY-LOADED QUESTION – PERFECT DARK (NINTENDO 64)

Appropriately steeped in mystery and espionage, Perfect Dark has its fair share of unanswered questions, most of which primarily deal with cheese. If you can get the better of the cheddar however, you’ll find that an even larger enigma awaits in the Combat Simulator. Selecting the Warehouse and choosing to explore the claustrophobic air ducts that surround the level will reveal a large manhole leading to the first floor. Directly above this shaft is a large vent that houses a single ammunition crate. While there isn’t a way to obtain this crate, you might notice that the grating underneath has been cut to resemble a question mark – a detail that can be seen best when viewed through the FarSight XR-20. The vent may appear to be transparent, but nothing is more convoluted than the intention of these unsolved mysteries.
